The Knowledge Industry Programme, promoted by the Secretariat for Universities and Research of the Government of Catalonia, seeks to promote the creation and consolidation of a new entrepreneurial ecosystem, of high added value and knowledge-rich, based on the results produced by the different knowledge creation centres of the Catalan science and innovation system, for the purpose of ensuring the creation of highly-qualified jobs and a significant improvement in innovative activities that should act as a driving force for the Catalan economy in the coming years.
This programme forms part of the Smart Specialisation Strategy for Catalonia (RIS3CAT), which promotes R&D&I as a driver for the transformation of the productive fabric. RIS3CAT contemplates the valorisation of knowledge and innovation transfer as key tools in achieving this goal.
The Knowledge Industry grants relate to Specific Objective 1.2.2, "Knowledge transfer and cooperation between companies and research centres” and represent a support tool for the valorisation and innovation transfer set forth in the ERDF Investment and Growth Operational Programme ‘Catalonia’ 2014-2020.
The action MERCAT combines a participation loan by Instruments Financers per a Empreses Innovadores (IFEM) and a grant in the form of a warranty awarded by the SUR with the objective of promoting the creation of new technologically innovative enterprises that can introduce new products or processes into the market which result from the knowledge created within the universities and research centres in Catalonia, helping them through initial growth and consolidation phases into reaching the maturity necessary to access financial markets to continue the development of their projects.
