Carhus Plus + is a system of classification of scientific journals in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities that are published locally, nationally and internationally. This project, developed by AGAUR at the proposal of the General Directorate for Research, is presented in order to contribute to the evaluation of the research carried out in the Catalan scientific and university system with the highest objectivity.
In this edition, and as a novelty, Carhus Plus + becomes a multi-area system where the journals that require it become classified in several fields at the same time. If required, a magazine may have different A, B, C or D grades depending on the area of knowledge.
On March 27, 2019 we published the Carhus Plus + 2018 version.
However, when the publications prior to 2019 are assessed, the reference version is CARHUS Plus+ 2014.

1. Which journals are in Carhus Plus + 2018 and where did they come from?
Carhus Plus + groups local, national and international scientific journals in the fields of social sciences and humanities.
The magazines included come from:
ERIH Lists. European Reference Index for the Humanities 2007: classification of European journals in the fields of social sciences and humanities prepared by the European Science Foundation. From this source of information includes a selection of all journals that have an ICDS greater than 3. For a more detailed explanation of the ICDS, see the section “What is the ICDS?”.
Research groups recognized by the Generalitat of Catalonia in 2005 in the fields of social sciences and humanities: from this source of information a selection of the journals where these groups had been published between 2001 and 2005 was included. Only those that are clearly from areas of knowledge external to the social sciences and the humanities have been excluded.
IN-RECS. Índice de impacto, revistas españolas en ciencias sociales: index of journals prepared by the research group Evaluation of Science and Scientific Communication of the University of Granada. From this documentary source all the citing and cited magazines of the 2001-2005 period have been included.
RESH, Spanish Journals of Social and Human Sciences: classification of journals prepared by the Center for Information and Scientific Documentation (CINDOC). From this documentary source, all the citing journals used until 2003 and those cited in the 2000-2003 period have been included.
National Citation Report for Spain 1981-2006: from the exploitation of the Thomson Reuters Scientific database that contains the scientific production present in its various bibliometric databases - in particular Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A & HCI) -, the list of journals where Catalan researchers have published in the period 1997-2006 has been included in Carhus Plus+.
Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the 2016 Social Sciences Edition: database prepared by Clarivate Analytics. The journals of the Nursing (2016 edition) and Psychiatry (2016 edition) areas have been excluded because they are not of these knowledge areas. Journals in quartiles three and four have been excluded in the field of economics, according to the 2016 JCR.
Collective proposals addressed to AGAUR from universities and research centres mainly.
Individual proposals submitted by the editors.
Catalan journals in the fields of language, literature and history according to some specific sources: the Reports of the survey of Catalonia: 1996-2002 of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans or the thesis of Jordi Ardanuy Baró.
All magazines ceased before 2014 are excluded from this set, because they are considered inactive. In addition, most journals that are not in electronic format, not included in the Scopus or Clarivate Analytics database or those that are not in the Catalan library system, have not been evaluated as being difficult to access.

3. Can the same journal be repeated in different scientific categories or have different classifications?
In this edition, and as a novelty, Carhus Plus + becomes a multi-area system where the journals that require it become classified in several fields at the same time. Journals that comprise various areas of knowledge may have different A, B, C or D.
4. Why is the SNIP indicator used instead of other indicators that also measure the impact of journals?
Given its characteristics, the SNIP indicator is considered to be finely tuned to the characteristics of the social sciences and humanities.
First, the greater coverage of non-English speaking journals indexed by Scopus - compared to other international databases. In addition, the extension of the time window for the calculation of the indicator is more realistic with the citation habits of the social sciences and the humanities. Finally, the SNIP indicator normalizes the calculation according to the characteristics of the scope of the cited journal and the probability that the journal will be cited within the database.
Consequently, the advantages of Scopus and the methodological characteristics of the SNIP indicator allow comparison between journals both within a field of knowledge and between journals from different fields.
5. How have the magazines of group A been classified?
This group includes journals that meet at least one of the following criteria:
- The journals present in the Scopus database according to the file published on the journalindicators.com website in May 2018.
- The journals that are present in the Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index according to the 2016 Master Journal List or in the Journal Citation Reports in the 2016 edition.
- And additionally they must be within 30% of the best ranked journals within each area of Carhus Plus + according to the Scopus SNIP indicator.
The journals that are not in this 30%, are automatically classified in levels B, C or D where the percentages of each group are 20%. For more information, see question 6.
Taking into consideration the specificity of the area of law, a percentage of 33% has been applied for each of the area's subdisciplines. Subsequently, those journals whose contents are among several subdisciplines of law have been reviewed.
Publications of catalanistic are classified as their own area. The objective of Carhus Plus + is to integrate catalanistic publications to be evaluated within the rest of the fields without the exceptional character they have had so far.
In this edition the catalanistic magazines classified in group A are:
Anuario de estudios medievales
Ausa. Publicació del patronat d'estudis osonencs
Caplletra. Revista internacional de filología

6. How have publications been classified in levels B, C and D?
The journals have been classified by establishing a quota of approximately 20% of the publications (calculated within each area of knowledge) for each level, and according to the ordering of the following indicators:
The journals indexed in Scopus have been ranked in descending order according to the SNIP indicator, in accordance with the file published on the www.journalmetrics.com website in May 2018. If this indicator has a value of 0, then the indicator has been taken into account ICDS.
For the other journals, not indexed in Scopus, they have been evaluated individually to review the value of each of the following parameters.
ICDS: the Secondary Composite Index Broadcasting (ICDS).
FORMAT: compliance with a set of parameters related to the formal norms of scientific publication. In particular they are:
- Compliance with the declared periodicity or the edition of the number of issues declared per year.
- Instructions to authors: the journal should give the authors some rules for sending originals and abstracts.
- The affiliation of the authors: appearance of the institution for which the author or authors of the journal work.
- Keywords: inclusion of keywords for each article.
- Summary in English
PEER REVIEW SYSTEM of the articles.
TYPE OF EDITORIAL COMMITTEE that runs the magazine.
Of all these variables a weighted average has been made according to the following percentages:
These variables have been weighted according to this percentages:
ICDS | FORMAT | PEER REVIEW SYSTEM | EDITORIAL COMITEE |
---|---|---|---|
50% | 25% | 12.5% | 12.5% |
According to this arrangement, a quota of approximately 20% of the journals has been established (calculated within each area of knowledge) for each level B, C and D.
7. What is the ICDS?
The Secondary Composite Index Broadcasting (ICDS) is the result of a project designed by the Miar Team (http://miar.ub.edu/about-us) of the Faculty of Library and Information Science of the University of Barcelona . The ICDS is an indicator that measures the diffusion of the magazines on the scientific databases
8. How can I know the ICDS of a magazine?
The ICDS is published by the database Information Matrix for the Analysis of Journals (Miar). Miar collects key information for the identification and evaluation of journals.
9. How is the ICDS calculated?
Miar links by the ISSN number selected groups of journals established according to scientific areas – subdivided at the same time in more specific scientific disciplines -. The system creates a matrix of correspondence between identified journals by its ISSN and the databases and catalogues which index or include them. Besides, it is indicated the link to the websites of the editors and institutions responsible of the catalogues and sources if Miar gets it.
- If the journal appears in Web of Science Core Collections (AHCI, SCIE, SSCI o ESCI) or Scopus it is assigned a score of 3,5.
- If the journal appears in WoS classic indexes (AHCI, SCIE or SSCI) and Scopus it is assigned a score of +1.
- If the journal appears in an abstract and indexing database (specialized or multidisciplinary) it is a assigned score of +3.
- If it included in two or more specialized or multidisciplinary databases is assigned 5 points (3+2).
- If not appear in any database indexing but it's appears in the Latindex catalogue (not to be confused with the Latindex directory) or a repertoire of assessment (CARHUS Plus, ERIHPlus and sello de calidad FECYT) it is a assigned score 2,5.
- If it appears only on the DIALNET Spanish database 0,4 points are assigned.
Finally, the calculation is completed with the rate of survival of the journal, which is calculated based on the logarithm of the total years of life the title from the beginning of its publication, considering a maximum of 30 years in the calculation.
10. How often is Carhus Plus + updated?
A new version of Carhus Plus + will appear periodically including new updates. The 2018 version is the fourth since 2008.
11. How is the presence of a publication published in the databases of Miar?
Contact your database and indexes that are available on the subject of the journal to inform you of the procedure for which he continued. In this file you have information about the databases and a contact address.
12. How can you propose the inclusion of a new journal?
Those responsible for a magazine can send AGAUR requests to include a magazine. The proposal will have to be accompanied by an updated report explaining the parameters of scientific publication met by the journal. The report will have to explain how the parameters explained in the section "How have magazines been classified in levels B, C and D?" are met, mentioning the evaluation system of the articles by the journal and the percentage of rejected articles.
The proposal must be endorsed by three professors from different universities with the corresponding electronic or handwritten signature (if the original is sent by post).
